AION LIO: The Wireless Bridge Between IO-Link and LoRaWAN®
The digitization of industrial plants often fails not because of the sensors, but because of connectivity. While IO-Link is now considered an established standard in factory automation, integration into modern IoT platforms frequently requires additional cabling, gateways, or complex infrastructure.
With the new AION LIO, Sentinum closes exactly this gap.
The AION LIO is a high-performance IO-Link-to-LoRaWAN® bridge that integrates industrial IO-Link devices directly into wireless LoRaWAN® networks.
This allows existing sensors, actuators, and measuring devices to be easily and cost-effectively integrated into modern IoT applications without laying new cables or retrofitting existing systems.
AION LIO – The IO-Link to LoRaWAN® Bridge
Direct connection of IO-Link devices to LoRaWAN®
Significantly reduced installation and infrastructure costs
Easy retrofitting of existing machines and systems
Long wireless ranges and energy-efficient data transmission
Access to complete IO-Link process data
Ideal for condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and smart factory applications
The system architecture of the AION LIO seamlessly connects the existing IO-Link ecosystem with modern LoRaWAN® networks and IoT platforms.
An IO-Link sensor is connected directly to the AION LIO adapter. The adapter captures the sensor’s process data and transmits it wirelessly via LoRaWAN® to a gateway. From there, the data can be processed flexibly.
Depending on the use case, various integration options are available:
This enables companies to integrate their existing IO-Link sensors into modern Industrial IoT infrastructures without additional cabling and to efficiently digitize existing systems.
Millions of IO-Link devices are already in use worldwide. With AION LIO, these sensors become part of a modern IoT architecture without the need to replace existing hardware.
Typical applications include:
Under the motto “See More. Wire Less.,” AION LIO was unveiled for the first time at the Things Conference 2026 in Amsterdam.
The solution combines the proven world of IO-Link with the advantages of LoRaWAN®:
This opens up entirely new possibilities for the wireless collection of process and machine data in industrial environments.
Whether it’s a new plant or existing infrastructure, AION LIO enables a quick start to industrial digitalization.
Wireless connectivity offers significant advantages, particularly in retrofit projects, as existing IO-Link sensors can continue to be used and time-consuming cabling is eliminated.
This allows projects to be implemented faster, costs to be reduced, and valuable data from previously inaccessible machines to be tapped.
A key advantage of the AION LIO is its support for IODD (IO Device Description) parsing. This significantly simplifies and accelerates the integration of IO-Link devices.
Instead of merely transmitting raw data or manufacturer-specific byte sequences, the AION LIO can read the information from the IODD and automatically interpret the process data. Measured values, units, limit values, diagnostic information, and parameters are thus directly converted into understandable data points.
For users, this means:
By combining IODD parsing with LoRaWAN® connectivity, the AION LIO transforms from a simple wireless bridge into an intelligent data converter. Sensor information is not only transmitted wirelessly but is also simultaneously processed for cloud platforms, dashboards, and applications.
This allows new IO-Link devices to be put into operation in no time at all, without having to analyze complex data structures or develop custom decoders.
Would you like to wirelessly integrate your existing IO-Link devices into a LoRaWAN® network and accelerate your journey toward Industry 4.0?
